Few of Many Applications Areas of Plastics are:
Automotive - Plastic components weigh 50 percent less than similar components
made from other materials, which means a 25 to 35% improvement in fuel economy
and subsequently less pollution. For every kilogram lost, car will emit 20 kilograms
less of carbon dioxide over its operating life. Car assembly becomes easier with
single moulded components plastics reduce composite materials that are strong,
wear-resistant, and can handle high loads and impact, can be metal-plated for
decorative components where appearance is a premium.
Aerospace- Plastics provide high strength-to-weight ratios, low friction, high
strength, and temperature stability suitable to the extreme temperatures found at
high- altitudes and in outer space. For underwater simulations of in-space
operations, plastics do not corrode and provide neutral buoyancy for realistic
practice sessions. For commercial airliner, Some 22% of the Airbus 380 fleet is built
with carbon-fibre reinforced plastics – composite ( centre wing box, a crucial
structure which connects the wings to the fuselage, the fin, the rear fuselage section
and for ceiling beams) . A380 burns fuel per passenger at a rate comparable to that
of an economical family car. Less weight saves fuel, anticipated at around 20% and
reduce maintenance costs approx 30% than for aluminum aircraft.
Medical Industry: Plastic materials can be sterilized hundreds of times without
degradation. Lightweight plastics are used to from hearing aids, replacement joints,
non-surgical supports, and therapy equipment. Clear plastics provide visibility for
transfusions, syringes, surgeries, diagnostic equipment & disposables like I.V.
Catheters, I.V.Sets, blood and urine bags of all kinds.
Packaging Industry- Plastic packaging like Bottles, Crates & Pallets, Closures,
Disposables, Drums, Food Containers & Trays, Film, EPS, Protective Packaging,
Intermediate Bulk Containers, flexible packaging to name the few for packaging of
Food, Medicals, Chemicals, Pharmaceuticals, Industrial, consumer good and
durables, others.
Construction - The Construction sector is the second highest user of plastics after
packaging. Plastics, are easily formable, and their light weight enables them to be
easily transported and moved on site, combined with excellent strength to weight
ratio, durability, cost effectiveness, low maintenance and corrosion resistance (no
regular re-painting) which make an economically attractive choice throughout the
construction sector. Piping and Conduit consume 35% production of total
polymers used in construction, producing rainwater and cabling goods, large
diameter pipes for sewage, drainage and potable water made from PVC and
Polyethylene. Cladding and Profiles- for windows, doors, coving, and skirting
made from PVC-U, exterior cladding using phenolic is replacing timber are fire
resistance.
Insulation- Polystyrene rigid foam is incorporated into panels or sandwiched into
construction of walls and roofs as they are light, durable and meet energy
conservation regulations. Elastomers used for weather strips, aperture seals,
gaskets and expansion joints. PVC seals used in windows and doors, also as a
membrane for roofing and linings, floor coverings.
Electronics: applications like plastic keypads and housings for telephones,
machines photocopiers and computers, food processors, toasters, kettles and
