product thereby retaining freshness and extending the shelf life of the product.
Flavor Enhancers: Controlled release of desirable aromas from plastic package
materials has been suggested as a means to enhance the flavour perception of
contained food on opening and closing shortly thereafter. Flavours diffuse into or
permeate through plastic by virtue of the free volume and porosity of the polymer.
Plastic materials contain unoccupied space or free volume within their polymer
matrix, as its increase, the mobility of the polymer chain segments increases, and
the diffusion of small volatile molecules increases.
Equilibrium Modified Atmosphere (EMA): EMA is one of the natural processes
that guarantees better preservation of fresh vegetable and foods products. EMA
balances the gas permeability of plastic films with the rate of respiration of the salad
products or fresh vegetables. The new generation of intelligent films consists of
plastic materials that can modify the gas permeability during the self life of the
product, adapting to the respiration rate of the content or the immediate
       environment.
Odor Controllers: Incorporation of deodorizers along with the fragrance to
enhance performance and to absorb more unwanted odors is developing
application. Masking of undesired and enhancement of desired odour in the
packaging system to enhance the overall
Controlled Gas Permeability: The final package automatically regulates oxygen
ingress and carbon dioxide egress by transpiration according to the prevailing
temperature, whereby an optimum atmosphere is maintained around the product
during storage and distribution, extending freshness and allowing shipping of
higher quality products to the consumer
Moisture Control: In a package, moisture control is usually targeted at either very
dry food or at respiring, wet, and consequently high relative humidity,
fresh/minimally processed produce. To-date, silica gel has been the
moisture absorbent of choice for dry food, but incorporated into sachets or other
       forms placed within the package.
Perhaps, the most intriguing moisture controllers are those in which the desiccants
are incorporated into the plastic package itself.
Breathable Film has today emerged as a very popular packaging material.
Produced by compounding PP or PE resin with mineral filler. The film is then
stretched mono or bi axially to create micro pores in the cast film. In a subsequent
process this breathable film can be laminated with a nonwoven web using adhesive
or a point-bonding calendar to produce a soft, textile like composite. Breathable
films, the ability of extruded films to allow the gases to escape, but retain the larger
water molecules, inhibiting the dehydration process. Used for packing fresh cut
       vegetables and fruits.
Ethylene Absorbers/Removal: Ethylene is a growth hormone that facilitates in
sprouting and faster ripening. Some of the PE/LDPE plastic films with finely ground
calcium carbonate or crysburite ceramic have been tried by Japanese companies,
for ethylene removal from fresh food packaging.
