GLOBAL POLYMER CAPACITIES & FUTURE TRENDS
Worldwide plastics production rose to 280 million tonnes in 2011, according to first
rough estimates published by PlasticsEurope. This represents around 4% increase
from 2010, when 270 million tonnes of plastics were produced. It also confirms the
return of long term growth after the economic crisis.
The five largest plastics types (polyolefins, PVC, PS, EPS and PET) account for about
70% of the total global demand, i.e. 200 million tonnes. From 2010 to 2016, global
plastics consumption is expected to grow by an average of about 4 % each year.
Overall, PE consumption is forecast to grow at an average annual rate of 3.7% per
year between 2014 and 2019. If current forecast come to fruition, Global PE
consumption is forecast to exceed 100,000 KT by 2019. The highest growth rate –
9.0% CAGR – is forecast for India, where economic growth for the next 5 years is
expected to be in the 8-9% range. Despite the political uncertainty in large parts of
the region, the Middle East is also expected to continue to see steady growth
through 2019. The GCC remains strong and focused on innovation, while the
Turkish economy has shown remarkable performance with its steady growth, and is
expected to continue moving forward. (Source: Townsend Solutions)
