SECTION 2 Auditory System





               The auditory system consists of the external ear, the middle ear, and the inner

               ear. The ear is a specialized sensory organ that contains structures responsible
               for hearing, balance, and maintenance of equilibrium.


               EXTERNAL EAR






               The  auricle,  or  pinna,  of  the  external  ear  gathers  sound  waves  from  the
               environment  and  directs  them  through  the  external  auditory  canal  to  the
               eardrum  or  tympanic  membrane,  from  which  the  sound  is  directed  to  the

               middle ear (Fig. 22.13).
