ABSTRACT
Hydrogen gas is an eco-friendly energy-dense fuel. It is considered a clean
and reasonable alternative to traditional fossil fuels [1,2]. Water
electrolysis has long been proven technology generating high purity
hydrogen gas [1]. Herein, the development of ternary catalysts (NiCoFe-
based catalysts) is proposed for tailoring efficient cathodes for hydrogen
evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline medium. Surface analysis techniques
have been used to identify the composition and morphology of the
prepared catalysts. Electrochemical measurements (e.g., LSV, Tafel plots,
EIS, and chronopotentiometry) have been performed to characterize the
various electrocatalysts and to probe their electrocatalytic activity towards
the HER. NiCoFe-based catalyst (passivated in 1.0 M KOH) showed
significantly low overpotentials for the HER (ƞ10 = 70 mV and ƞ100 = 250 mV
recorded at a current density of 10 and 100 mA cm , respectively) in 1.0 M
-2
KOH with a remarked stability for a prolonged operation for 10
continuous hours at 100 mA cm . The obtained data indicated that the
-2
proposed ternary catalyst is a promising one for the HER and shed light
on the effect of electro-passivation on the electrocatalytic activity towards
HER.
