FEMALE EMPOWERMENT
The Saudi government is making efforts to improve employment prospects for women and has several
initiatives designed to increase female participation in the workforce. Primary education and vocational
training focus on traditional occupations while higher education is typically devoted to the humanities and
social sciences. The "Women’s Employment in the Retail Sector (WERS)" initiative, implemented in 2011,
requires shops that sell lingerie, cosmetics and women’s products to replace male with female staff. The
initiative sets a salary for Saudi women working in these shops and provides training in sales, customer service
and as cashiers. The MoL also offers various online courses to enhance employment opportunities and
advance women’s careers.
