47 DAYS OF FANTASTIC SUCCESS.
Last 7 minutes of tremendous learning!!
Millions of people stayed awake on 7th Sep, tracking the
THE STORY OF progress of the Chandrayaan 2 Mission, towards expected
touchdown at about 2 am .
CHANDRAYAAN 2
Everything was going well - the Lander had begun its descent
to the lunar surface - the deceleration, the rough braking phase,
the navigation control phase progressed as planned. The fine
braking phase, the terminal descent phase and the touchdown
were just moments ahead. Tragically, briefly into the fine
braking phase , Mission Control lost contact with
the Lander . It appears probable that the
Lander was travelling too fast and
crash-landed on the lunar surface.
By Monday, the Lander was
located lying unbroken but in a
tilted condition, 500 meters from
the planned touchdown site .
Efforts are underway to re-
establish contact with the Lander.
However , there are the following take-away:
1) The maximum amount of observation and data capture is
expected to be carried out by the instruments and cameras
onboard the Orbiter - which is operating perfectly and is in
continuous communication with Mission Control at Bangalore .
2) The Data Gathering by the Orbiter will go on upto 7 years or
so and will include the search for further evidence of water
availability on the moon and an assessment of its relative
abundance.
