Friday night loss sends Bearcats to Saturday tie- breaker game which results in win over Brewer
Staff Reports
The Community News
With both Aledo and Brewer drop- ping games in their respective District 6-5A nales on April 28 – Brewer to district-champion Northwest and the Bearcats to sixth-place Saginaw – each team nished the 14-game 6-5A slate with identical 8-6 records.
With the two teams splitting their district series, a “Game 15” was needed as the ‘Cats and Bears hooked up on April 29 at Brewer to play for second place.
Make that, Game 15 and a half.
Paced by seven shutout innings in relief by Trevor Stone and three runs in the top of the 13th inning, the Bearcats secured the district’s second seed by downing the Bears, 6-3.
The second-seeded Bearcats will face Denton High School, the third seed from District 5-5A, in a Class 5A, best-of-three bi-district playoff series.
Game one is at 4:20 p.m. today (Friday, May 5) at Saginaw High School. Game two is set for 11 a.m. Saturday at Saginaw High School, with game three,

if necessary, to follow game two. Trailing 3-2 with two outs and nobody on base in the top of the sev- enth inning, it appeared the Bearcats would have to settle for third place. But Calloway Shands worked a walk and was replaced on rst base by pinch
runner Jake McClendon.
The next batter, Jacob Arizpe, sin-
gled to put runners on rst and third as the ‘Cats stayed alive. McClendon scored when freshman Nathen Fingar singled to center eld to tie the game, 3-3.
In the seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th innings, Brewer could not touch Aledo pitcher Stone, who came on in the fourth for starter Steven Swift and was pulled in the 11th after seven innings of relief where he allowed no runs on four hits with one walk and two strikeouts.
The Bears has less success with the next Aledo pitcher, Trever Bruno, who kept the game tied as it entered the 13th frame.
Aledo went ahead 4-3 when fresh- man Garrison Berkley doubled and was driven home on a triple by Hunter Rosson. Rosson scored two batters later on an error as Aledo led 5-3. Arizpe, who had reached on the error, scored on a bases loaded walk to increase the lead to 6-3.
TONY EIERDAM/THE COMMUNITY NEWS
Although he did not earn a win statistically, Aledo relief pitcher Trevor Stone, shown in an earlier game, kept the Bearcats in the game with seven shutout innings in Aledo’s 13-inning, 6-3 win over Brewer Saturday in a District 6-5A tiebreaker game. The Bearcats will face Denton in the bi-district playoffs.
