The Community News
Battling a strong wind and hard-charging, state-qualify- ing-seeking teams, the Aledo Bearcats shot a second-round score of 314 on April 27 for a nal total of 640 to maintain sec- ond place at the Region I tourna- ment at Rawls Golf Course which advances the team to the boys’ Class 5A state golf tournament.
The boys’ 5A state golf tour- nament will be held May 22-23 at Wolfdancer Golf Club in Bastrop.
The Bearcats were in second place (on April 26) after the rst round of the 36-hole tournament, and two teams were within two strokes of the Bearcats. The top three teams at the four regional tournaments qualify for the state tournament.
But in the nal round, paced by a 77 from Austin Grif th, the Bearcats shot a 314 for a 36-hole total of 640, stayed in second place and will advance to the state tournament.
“I was very proud of the way the boys handled the rough con- ditions, especially Austin,” AHS head coach Jeff Lemons said. “He

“The boys played very well under some challenging conditions,” Lemons said. “(The rst) round was played under the worst weather we faced all year, with temps in the upper 40’s and winds from the north sustained from 20-30 and at times gusting over 40 mph.
“Austin set the tone for us by mak- ing birdie on his rst hole, the extreme- ly dif cult par 3 10th hole. He went on to shoot his lowest round of the year.”

has very low ball ight on his shots which gave him an advan- tage in the wind, and he took full advantage of it to shoot what I believe is his lowest total ever in a tournament.
“I couldn’t be happier for the senior boys – Parker (Scaling), Andrew (Lane), and Austin – this is a great way to nish their high school careers. I think they have a great chance to compete for a medal at the state tournament.
“They haven’t nished lower than second in any tournament dating back to their last tour- nament of the fall, with four rst-place nishes and three sec- onds. We’re very excited about our opportunity and looking forward to getting to Wolfdancer.”
Grif th shot a 78 in the rst round for a 36-hole score of 155, which tied for team best with Scaling (75-80).
Other Bearcats scores include Evan Pennington (88-78) and Ben Huxtable (85-81), each with a 166, and Andrew Lane (92-79) with a 171.
“Day 2’s forecast was even worse than Day 1 with winds gust- ing up to 55 mph,” Lemons said. “Fortunately, they never reached those speeds, but it did switch directions to the west and were steady at 20-25 mph.
“Austin lowered his score from Day 1 to a 77, Evan dropped his score to 78, Andrew 79, Parker 80, and Ben 81. We nished second by
