The Ladycats’ softball team advanced to the area round of the playoffs after downing Denison, 6-5, in game two of a best-of-three bi-district playoff series at Aledo High School Friday night.
The win came on the heels of a dominant 14-3 defeat at Denison in game one, but game two was much more of a ght for the Ladycats, who struggled at the plate for a good por- tion of the game.
The Ladycats started strong, answering two rst inning runs from Denison with four runs of their own, but in the second inning, things began to fall apart for Aledo as Denison tied the game 4-4. The Ladycats went three outs in a row in the bottom of the second – two strikeouts followed by a pop y – but were able to hold Denison in the top of the third, keeping the score tied.
The Ladycats were unproductive at the plate, leaving them unable to pull away.
“I told them to wake up,” said coach Heather Oakes. “We were treating it like we knew we were going to win, but midway through I told them they weren’t going to lay down and we had to start ghting.”
The bats woke up in the fth inning with pitcher Hannah Andrews knocking a double near- ly out of the park, sending Megan Reynolds across the plate for the go-ahead run to make it 5-4 in the Ladycats’ favor.
“Our bats nally got working,” said Oakes. “It was about time.”
Denison tied it up in the top of the seventh inning but a diving catch by Gracie King provided the third out, paving the way for Mykayla
