“We hope there is someone out there who can come up with a good replacement spot and carry on the tradition.”
James said the church has had to contend with people leaving paint cans by the church’s dumpster, painting during church services, and most recently, a political advertise- ment on the building.
“This could be seen as an endorsement by the church,” said James. “That could get us in trou- ble.”
By law, churches are not allowed to endorse political candidates, and doing so could threaten the non-pro t status of the church. James said the church would like to have a plan in place by the end of June, or would “reluctantly begin looking for other options.”
Mayor Kit Marshall said a con- versation had already begun about the Paint Shack’s future.
“This is not the rst time it has been brought forward that people were being a little irresponsible with their paintbrushes and paint,” she said. “I remember at the time of that conversation, I did say if resi- dents – and I’m not talking about the residents of the city, I’m talking about residents of the community as a whole –- did not see t to be responsible in their painting, that things could change in the future.
