Policy 120: Member Injury & Illness Reporting
      OBJECTIVE:
Policy 121: Communicable Disease and Head Lice
Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale places priority on member safety.
 This includes the timely and appropriate handling of any issues of injury or
 illness that may occur while at the Club. Staff must handle the situation
 appropriately, use proper safety measures, communicate clearly, and
 document thoroughly.

     PROCEDURAL STEPS:
If a member gets injured or becomes ill, staff should address the situation immediately in a caring and professional manner. Staff must remain calm and immediately document all the details of the injury/illness to ensure proper care is provided. Injuries or illnesses should only be discussed with appropriate parties such as branch management, parents/guardians, administration and emergency medical staff (if applicable).

Assess the Situation: If a member injury or illness occurs, immediately and appropriately care for the member and give whatever first aid is available and necessary.
If the member is showing signs of a communicable disease, isolate the youth to reduce the likelihood of spreading and contact the parent/guardian immediately. These signs may include but are not limited to: fever, diarrhea, vomiting, sores/mouth sores, rash, eye drainage, unusual skin color, microbes/bugs, stomach pain, dizziness, excessive sleepiness or faint, etc.
If the injury or illness is beyond the scope of care that can be administered by the BGCS, such as excessive bleeding, unconsciousness, seizure or other serious situation, DO NOT move the child. Call 911 and the member’s parent(s)/guardian(s), immediately. If the member is taken by emergency personnel, staff should meet the parents/guardians and member at the medical care facility that s/he is taken to.
In the case of an injury occurring at the Club, the Crisis Communication Plan must go into effect immediately! Do not disclose any sentiment of fault/blame. Be aware that all statements can be used at a later time.
Secure the Area of Injury: If there is blood, liquids, or damaged property, keep other staff and members away from the area by blocking it off until maintenance or the authorities can address it. Contact Branch Management Staff: Notify the full-time staff member in charge of the facility immediately and the Branch
