WHAT'S HAPPENING AT BELLMERE
What's happening at Bellmere
A self contained community that will break new
ground in caring for the aged and those living with
dementia
All of the latest research into dementia tells us that smaller less clinical
environments, where people can be involved in their daily routine, and in daily
decision making, provides a better life for the person living with a diagnosis of
dementia. Small Scale provides the right prompts so that people are able to live as
normal a life as possible which is aligned with our values and vision for a new
direction in aged care.
Our vision of care is inclusive of everyone no matter their diagnosis which makes
Synovum Care Bellmere the first community of its kind in the world. Whilst the
design of Synovum Care Bellmere specifically supports and assists people living
with a diagnosis of dementia, it is a community designed to suit everybody. Small
Scale Houses are simply domestic style homes designed as a familiar environment
to those residents who move in. The outdoor component will account for more
than 50% of the design and gives residents easy access to an active community. It
is made up of ‘normal’ street scapes, parks, a town centre and gardens. The town
centre includes a wellness centre, corner shop, theatre, café, barbers and
hairdressers. Access to the outdoor space, and to the wider Bellmere community,
provides the opportunity for residents to meet and interact with people visiting
the town centre or dropping into neighbours for a cuppa - all of which supports
important social interaction. This freedom of movement is possible through the
use of the most advanced technologies, such as movement sensors, that offer
safety as well as independence to our community.
Australian Lifestyles
People will be selected to live in a house with like-minded people - meaning people
who share the same core values. Living with people who share the same values will
support a resident’s feeling of safety, of being at ‘home’ and in familiar surroundings.
It will encourage more social interaction with those within each household.
The small scale
development at Bellmere
will be a world first
Synovum Care commissioned leading research company McCrindle to define the Australian Lifestyles. The research identified six
Australian Lifestyle Archetypes which are Modern Innovator, Contemporary Collaborator, Contemplative Progressor, Traditionalist,
Conventional Mainstreamer and New Conservative. All residents will complete the survey which reveals their core values and allows us
to place them in a house with people who are similar to them.
In 2016 Synovum Care Bellmere won Aging Asia’s Silver Architect Award and is a finalist in two categories in the 2017 awards ‘Innovation
of the year’ and ‘Facility of the year, Independent Living’. The Bellmere community is due to open in July 2017.
