In his book, “The Myth of Race; The Troubling
Persistence of an Unscientific Idea,” Robert Wald
Sussman quotes a 1950 statement by the United Nations
Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization
(UNESCO), which asserts that “all humans belong to the
same species and that the concept of race is not a
biological reality, but a myth.” The vast majority of
today’s researchers in human variation contend that
biological races do not exist among the human species.
Sussman further states that, among those who study the
subject of human variation, who use and accept modern
scientific techniques and logic, hold that this scientific
fact is indisputable. It is as valid, true, and as immutable
as the fact that the earth is round and revolves around
9
the sun.
It is clear from the above discussions that race is not
biologically identifiable. Nonetheless, select groups have
become racialized through a deliberate social process
that marks them for unequal treatment based on
perceived physiological variances. This illustrates the
extent to which the present-day socioeconomic
hypotheses of race have drifted from biological
legitimacy. 10
