7The epic landscape is scattered by ancient mountains thrust up from millenia-old magma. Unique rock shapes, meandering rivers, dramatic waterfalls and dense rainforests all help to define Chiribiquete, and explain why the park%u2019s biodiversity is one of the greatest on the planet.Serran%u00eda de Chiribiquete sits within the largest protected continuous tropical forest cover in the Amazon area (3 million hectares (nearly the size of Belgium)) and is supported by the %u201cFrankfurt Zoological Society%u201d It is also one of the world%u2019s 30 %u201cLegacy Landscapes%u201d which receive sponsorship to support the nominated landscape indefinitely.One further major factor contributing to Chiribiquete%u2019s status as UNESCO World Heritage Site is the presence of tens of thousands of ancient rock paintings created by mysterious ancestors. Prehistoric humans have been drawn to Chiribiquete, for at least ten thousand years. Partly, this has been down to the generous ecosystems but there is also an element of divine inspiration.DESPITE THE THREAT of habitat loss, Chiribiquete%u2019s remarkable landscape with its outstanding biodiversity, remains the largest tract of protected and pristine wilderness in the world. It is a microcosm of how the Earth was before humanity caused a global imbalance by unsustainable behaviour. But it is also time machine, giving us a vision of what the future could look like.
