A Week
Full of New
Experiences
After participating in Close-Up this year, the
Junior Class developed a deeper sense of unity
and patriotism. Close-Up is a national program
designed to introduce students to the Federal
Government through hands-on activities in
Washington, D.C. The students spent the week of
January 14 through 20, 2001, attending seminars
and workshops where they learned, discussed, and
exchanged views on a variety of topics and issues.
This time was particularly significant because
it coincided with the inaugural events and
activities for the new president, George W. Bush.
Students appreciated the convenient timing and
were able to witness many of the ceremonies by
which the transfer of power is celebrated in a
democracy. Also, students visited many impor
tant sights such as the Lincoln Memorial, the
White House, the Smithsonian, Capitol Hill, and
Arlington Cemetery.
