P. 6
Key Messages: The Repair Stage
There are three important elements to effective repair: explore different
perspectives; think through who and what needs repair; plan how, when and where 1
the repair will be done.
2 Being consistent in carrying out repair whenever someone is disadvantaged keeps
expectations high and sends a strong message about pro-social skills.
Repair requires empathy. If a child refuses to repair, this suggests they have missing 3
skills in empathy; schedule practice for building these skills.
4 Be clear with all involved that the purpose of repair is to plan amends, restore
relationships and teach empathy (not to work out how to manage next time).
Repair builds long-term skills over time – from problem-solving and flexibility to
increased understanding and empathy. 5
