Pre4Best: Predict to
Prevent, Plan to Succeed
WHAT WE KNOW / UNDERSTAND PICTURE PROMPTS
▪ Connections between the parts of the brain associated with
emotions and the area of the brain linked to Executive Function
Skills (which help us to think things through and problem solve)
are not so strong in children/youths.
▪ This means it is harder to make good decisions in the moment
when emotions are high (pleasant or unpleasant emotions).
▪ Preparing ahead of time helps establish automatic responses and
means the child is less reliant on Executive Function Skills.
▪ Preparing and planning ahead therefore gives a child the best
chance to be at their best.
▪ There are two aspects to Prep4Best:
o Predict to Prevent: think through what could go wrong
o Plan to Succeed: plan what could help it to go right
▪ Too often, children are not given the time to Prep4Best and, as a
result, strategies and scaffolds that could have made such a
difference are overlooked.
▪ Prep4Best should think through the 5C Needs as well as learning
needs.
▪ Doing this regularly with children will help them to make it a
routine habit.
