A structure for responding:
The Ten Point Response Plan
WHAT WE KNOW / UNDERSTAND PICTURE PROMPTS
1. Traditional approaches using warnings, sanctions and rewards work
well in the moment but cause further problems in the future.
2. Traditional approaches using sanctions can fracture relationships and
compromise children’s relational emotional security. This drains a
child’s People Around Me Needs.
3. Sanctions also have a negative impact on a child’s World Around Me
Needs – often leaving the child feeling a lack of control over what is
happening and feeling less capable to manage and be successful.
4. The negative impact of sanctions on a child’s People Around Me Needs
and World Around Me Needs raises stress chemicals in the body which
are often already high.
5. The increase in stress chemicals reduces the efficacy of the pre-frontal
cortex. This leads to poorer Executive Function Skills.
6. Poor Executive Function Skills makes it even harder for a child to
manage.
7. The science demonstrates that the use of sanctions actually
exacerbate the very difficulties the child presents with initially.
8. Our Ten Point Response Plan is informed by the science of
neurobiology and what will help a child to do better over time.
