What should I practise now?

SKILLS TO PRACTISE / STRENGTHEN RAG

1 Teach children about the brain so they understand that it will be harder for them to make good
decisions in the moment and that Prep4Best will give them a better chance of doing well.

2 Be patient – when a child does not do the right thing in the heat of the moment, remember that

it will have been harder for them at that moment – it is not because they are ‘naughty’. It is a

sign that what they need is more support and teaching so they can manage better next time –
not made to feel bad about themselves which will only exacerbate their difficulties.

3 Help children to think through what they need to do well in the task – their physical, sensory,

              emotional and learning needs.

4 Give children a chance to Prep4Best ahead of time and before launching into a task. Help them

              a) predict what could go wrong and b) Plan how it could go well.

5 Spend time with children rehearsing specific scenarios in which they struggle e.g. If they find it

hard to be flexible when a game doesn’t go their way, practice that specific scenario and help

them to rehearse responding flexibly. Repeat this over and over again until it becomes habit.
