Brain Shaping Answers
4. Adverse Childhood Experiences can cause damage to
neural circuitry. It can also limit new brain building.
Adverse Experiences can also raise stress chemical levels in
the body and cause them to stay permanently on high. This
too can limit the building of new neural circuitry.
5. The Balance of Life model illustrates the impact of positive or
negative adverse experiences on a young person. It explains
how positive experiences build neural circuitry. Positive
experiences also build resilience to stressors; this means it is
easier for a child to manage any stressors that come the
child’s way. Conversely, negative adverse experiences block
neural circuitry. Negative experiences also lead a person to be
more vulnerable to stressors; this means that even small
stressors may ‘tip the balance’ and cause the child to
deregulate.
