Responding in the
Moment Answers
1. The main purpose of Repair Time is to mend fractured relationships and
work to maintain community cohesion. It is to ensure that any person
disadvantaged by someone’s actions or words feels they have been cared for
and supported. It is also to give the message that making amends is important
and to hold a child to account for their actions and words.
2. A Coaching Conversation has a very different aim of helping to work out
what is stopping the person from meeting expectations and helping them
find solutions that work for everyone.
3. The three parts of Repair Time are: 1) Explore different perspectives
2) Think through who and what needs repair 3) Work out when and where
the repair will take place.
4. The model used in the first step of Repair Time (looking at different
perspectives) is Chair Swap. The child physically sits on chairs to represent
the different people involved and imagines what things would have been like
for them during the incident. The aim of this phase is to help the child
understand and feel how their actions impacted on others. It builds the skills
of social cognition and empathy (one skill within emotional intelligence).
