P. 6
Repair Time: what is it and why do it?
▪ Repair Time is about planning how to repair any harm done when things went
wrong for the child.
▪ It has two purposes:
1. To repair relationships so they are peaceful in the future
2. To help build emotional intelligence so the child develops empathic concern and WANTS to do
the right thing by others.
▪ Repair Time is not for working out how to do better next time (we use ‘Coaching
Conversations’ for that). Repair should be tackled separately.
▪ Time: Yes – having separate repair does mean more time BUT –
‘If you don’t follow up, you’ll always be mopping up’.
Time now saves time in the future. Are you willing to invest?
▪ Don’t expect children to do better if you don’t do Follow Up and Repair consistently.
▪ In schools and organisations, there should be a procedure for this and allocated times.
