Step 1: explore perspectives
▪ Help the child consider how it was for each
person involved, including themselves.
▪ It can be helpful to have a different labelled chair
or physical space to represent each person.
▪ If the young person can’t imagine how it may
have been for the people involved, ask the people
involved themselves to explain; this can be very
powerful for the young person to hear.
▪ When the other people involved say how it was
for them, they should be helped to use the Speak Up4 Better technique – this stops
them ‘blaming’ which is likely to trigger a stress
response in the young person.
▪ If those involved do not want / don’t feel ok to explain,
the adult can do so on their behalf.
▪ The child may not respond when hearing how it was for others. Don’t force them to. The
important thing is that they have heard. This will help improve cognitive empathy.
