If a child refuses to repair:
▪ This simply gives us information that the child
doesn’t have the skills (yet) of:
❑ Cognitive empathy
❑ Emotional empathy or
❑ Empathic concern
▪ Forcing an apology or repair won’t improve their skills.
▪ The focus should therefore be on a plan to help the child
improve skills of empathy – through extra sessions at school & /or
tasks at home.
This should be framed as a support – NOT PUNISHMENT.
High expectations to improve; high support to do so.
