STEP 3: Help children to learn ways to manage unmet
needs so they can stay in control and bounce back
quickly:
a. Help children to get skilled at noticing and describing their ‘affect’ (energy and
pleasant and unpleasant feelings).
b. Help children to know and recognize their stress responses (prickle habits) before
they get too big.
c. Help children to get great at working out which 5C Needs are behind their
pleasant and unpleasant feelings.
d. Help children to practise ways which help them to tolerate the unpleasant feeling
of an unmet need for long enough to take control. Tolerance control takes
practice.
e. Help children to trial and then practise ways to self-soothe and feel ok again.
Help them discover which strategies work best for them.
f. Help children practice shifting into Positive Positions so they get really good at it
g. Help children to become confident at letting people know what they need
positively before – rather than ‘chucking their prickles’.
