6 Planning Tough Interviews
Introduction
OVERALL PLANNING
As a rule, tough interviews should be conducted as part of an overall investigations plan and
in compliance with the legal background explained in Chapter 5.
Never rush into any interview without careful planning
INTERVIEW OBJECTIVES
You should agree the objectives of each interview with your colleagues and legal advisers, and
decide whether or not a confession is important (see Figure 6.1).
If the evidence is already overwhelming and the objective is criminal prosecution, there
may be little to be gained from interviewing the suspect, other than being able to demonstrate
that by going through a low-key, formal process, he had been given the opportunity of giving
