The Structured Check List

    Your choice of the best opening statement should be made based on the objectives of the
interview and the strength of the existing evidence, as shown in Table 6.2.

    Also depending on your objectives, you decide whether the suspect should be cautioned
or not (see page [xref]). If your objectives are definitely not to press for criminal prosecution
you do not have to administer a caution.

    In all cases your opening statement and questions immediately after should:

• make it clear that you intend to find the truth and that you have limitless time and resources
   available to you;

• ask questions that commit the subject to detailed explanations;
• challenge untruths;
• state what you believe the facts to be, if necessary by making direct accusations.

If you are reasonably sure the subject is not telling the truth, you should proceed to Phase B

Phase B: Probing and testing
In this phase you move from an adult to a critical parent role, continue to ask detailed ques-
tions and test the subject’s reaction to the evidence and intelligence you have. You should
focus on the key points and obtain detailed explanations on the mechanics (the ‘how’) of what
you believe has happened. You will not remember all of the clues to deception described in
Chapter 4, so rely on your intuition but elevate specific concerns into your conscious aware-
ness.
