reduce the strength of the case or, in the worst eventuality, get it thrown out of court.
Don’t go for a ‘tough’ interview unless you have to
On the other hand, properly obtained and admissible admissions and confessions are impor-
tant because they:
• add support to the existing evidence and intelligence;
• disclose previously unknown offences;
• identify accomplices;
• identify control weaknesses which can be corrected;
• speed up and simplify the legal process;
• enable the victim to recover more quickly and easily;
• reduce the chance of acquittals and successful appeals against conviction.
Also, the suspect with whom you have established a close relationship may become a valuable
source of information on other matters.
Good interviews are worthwhile.
