Organ Function
Mouth Digestion of food begins in mouth:
- Teeth: chew (crush) food by jaw muscles
to help the action of enzymes
- Saliva: a liquid has enzyme softens and
breaks the food. “Chemical digestion”
Esophagus Muscles push the food down to the
esophagus (muscular tube) then to
stomach.
Stomach - A muscular organ.
- It makes churning movement.
Small - It secretes digestive fluids have acid and
intestine
enzymes break the food.
- A long, winding tube up to 6 m long.
- Enzymes secreted from pancreas and
gallbladder breaks down the food more.
- The wall of small intestine absorbs
nutrients through tiny blood vessels to
all body parts. (Absorption)
- Undigested food flows into the colon as
a soupy mixture.
Large - It absorbs water from the undigested
intestine food.
(Colon)
- Rectum stores the remained solid mass
“feces or stool” until it leaves the body
through anus (muscular opening)
- No digestion but absorption of water.
