The newproblem? A scarcity, ofcrutches has hit northernhospitals and it has reachedcrisis proportions over the lastfew months.Crutch dealers throughoutthe area have been frustratedby the fact that they have notbeen able to obtain die desireditems. %u201cThe wood,%u201d Methodistsays, %u201cis just not available.%u201dIn an attempt to cope withdie shortage Methodist hasissued an appeal to allBrooklynites, who may haveused crutches stashed away intheir basements or closets, toconsider selling them to thehospital at %u201cthree dollars foreach pair returned in goodcondition.%u201dThis crisis has forced thePark Slope institution to go allthe way to Texas, bytelephone, to find amanufacturer that could sell it20 dozen pairs of crutches, explained Morton Swickle,Director of Purchasing.Another four dozen pairs wereobtained through the HospitalBureau of VoluntaryHospitals. %u201cThis has eased thecrisis for now,%u201d stated Mr.Swickle. But the search willcontinue. Methodist employees have expressedconcern over the fact thatother hospitals in the areamay pick up the idea of appealing for help directly to thepublic and thereby create acompetitive atmosphere thatcould lead to another shortage. As the skiing season drawsto a close, and as Springcleaning time arrives, surelymany H ill-H eights-Sloperesidents will be able toovercome all sentimentalattachments and find itpossible to part with oldcrutches in response to thisappeal.Anyone wishing to help outin this crisis can contactRobert Queen or Eld Arangioin the Public Affairs Dept.,Methodist Hospital, at 780-3462.IA Better Way to Cook....S-L-O-W-L-Yin genuine sto n ew areROASTS %u2022 STEWS %u2022 SOUPSVEGETABLES %u2022 CAKES %u2022 BREADS GOURMET DELIGHTS...w o rth its w a it in flavorPut in the food.
