Meat Sales Off;Fish Sales Up!Continued from Page 3Did we ask if she noticed anyeffect after closing down for theweek? %u201c Customers were appreciative that I closed down,%u201d hesaid, %u201cMonday I sold out oneverything I had in the store but onTuesday my wholesaler wascharging 3 cents more per poundthan before the boycott. Now I%u2019mselling everything about at cost.%u201dIn Brooklyn Heights, AssociatedMarkets on Montague St. not onlyclosed down its meat section .during the week, but advisedcustomers to support the boycottby buying meat substitutes. Edward Taubman, owner of themarket, said he closed for tworeasons. %u201cFirst, I%u2019m in completeagreement with the consumerfight, and perhaps this will showthe rest of the customers thatAssociated is really concernedabout low prices. Second, if youcannot do full capacity, you mightas well close. Otherwise wecouldn%u2019t maintain our low prices.%u201dNot all merchants were a d -'versely affected. The Safi TradingCo. on Seventh Ave. at 8th St.,retailers of natural foods andcheeses, saw many new facesduring the week. %u201cThey bought alot of soybean and cheese,%u201d the comanager reported. %u201cIn fact, theywiped us out of cheese.%u201d We askedif the increased demand wouldraise cheese prices as it had withmeat. %u201cOf course the importedcheese prices are up a bit with thedevaluation, but domestic cheeseprices have remained stable,%u201d hesaid. Many families have turned tolower-priced main courses, particularly poultry and fish. However, in some cases the pricesfor these commodities have suffered greater percentage increasesthan beef. The PHOENIX talkedwith Anthony Butera, owner ofAnthony%u2019s Fish Market at 141Smith St., who said that there wasno notable increase in businessduring the boycott. %u201cSure we sawsome new customers last week, butfish prices just went up.%u201d We askedwhy fish prices should be so high.%u201cBecause the Russian trowlers arescrapping the bottom of the seas, the little guy%u2019s hardly getting acatch,%u201d he said. Like many fishretailers in the area, Mr. Buterasupports legislation that wouldextend the territorial waters from12 to 200 miles. At week%u2019s raid, it was clear thatthe boycott had been a smashingsuccess, so much so that somepeople became concerned aboutexactly whom they had smashed. The farmer, who nationwide isgetting upwards to 50 per centmore for their livestock than ayear ago, are not in such bad shapeto withstand the slackeneddemand. With the onset of Spring, feed prices are now cheaper, andsome ranchers have let it be knownthat they%u2019re willing to let theirbaby lambs grow to mutton. In anycase it is the large producer whocan hold out the best.It has been the middlemen, thelocal wholesalers and retailers, who were hit first and hardest bythe boycott. The retailers, inparticular have contributed theleast to the recent increases inmeat prices. The high-volume, lowprofit margin supermarkets claimthey are responsible for less than 2per cent of the recent increases.(D r. Q.. cfy%u00a3.L4. Meatless Thursdays and Fridays have beensuggested by some consumergroups. Many families have independently decided to just cutdown on their meat purchases, notas a political gesture, but simplybecause they can no longer affordthe luxury. One Park Slope womanwas excited about the prospect of alasting effect. %u201cWouldn%u2019t it be wildif people became vegetarianspermanently because of the meatprices?\%u201ePHOENIX.
