The fire quickly spread to the oil soaked bulkhead on the west side of the canal which burned furiously. Soon the sludgefilled, oily water of the Canal ignited and carried the flames across the %u201c water\to the east side of the bulkhead.The fire did not extend to any of the bulkside buildings but one civilian and one fireman were injured.
