SiteContinued from Page 2discussed for the proposedGowanus High School was the siteon the old Brooklyn Union GasCompany location (Smith andFifth Street). Since the majordelay in constructing high schoolshas been relocation problems ofhome owners, tenants andbusinesses, the Gowanus site affords an unusual opportunity sinceit is almost completely vacant. Some discussion revolved aroundthe opposition of a small group oflocal residents immediately nearthe site, but other speakersstressed that many residents nearthe site have recently changedtheir mind about the high schoolbecause of the growing industrialblight in the area. Substitutes forthe high school such as increasedheavy industrial or truck stationshave been mentioned recently. The members of IND overwhelmingly voted to go on recordsupporting the location of a minihigh school on the Gowanus site assoon as possible. Considerationwas given to the fact that previousefforts to locate a high school onthat location involved a high schoolof 4,000 students, but that presentproposals contemplate only a minihigh school, namely a school with1,500 to 2,000 pupils. IND pledged towork to help the community groupsseeking a high school to achievetheir purposes.on local residential streets.%u201dThe IND pledged to %u201cworkduring the implementation of thecontainerport proposal to insurethat these conditions are met.%u201dIn other action at the January 17meeting, the issue of overcrowdingat John Jay High School wasdiscussed. Various speakers whohave been involved in the highschool situation outlined thehistory of the community%u2019s attempt to obtain a high school in thearea to relieve overcrowding andto provide a facility closer to theyouths of South Brooklyn. In particular, discussionrevolved around the only locationin the City which would allowimmediate construction of a highschool without any relocationproblems at all.
