PHOENIX, Page ElevenBrooklyn Heights LandmarkArches/ Swirlsin 1 8 7 9BY LYNNE GRIFOA corner of Brooklyn Heights that is probably unfamiliar to most of the area's residents is the spot where Joralemon St. slopes down toward the East River and joins with Furman St. There, at the foot of Joralemon, stands a large building that remains practically as it was in 1879 when it was built. The building is the White Apartment House, and its architecture and design are quite unusual. Each apartment has its own door opening onto an outdoor balcony. The stairway up to the top is visible from the front of the building through archways at each landing. The purpose of including such unique structural elements was to provide the tenants with as much fresh air as possible and protection from fire. The dark, impressive, building was sponsored as housing for the needy by Alfred T. White, a wealthy Heights resident who was involved in a number of similar philanthropic enterprises.11th Hour For PierrepontContinued from Page 3drugs, and prostitution at the hotel, which, according to senior citizenswho reside there, are comm onplace occurrences. Theirreports have been made availableto the police and city regulatoryagencies, and have proved successful in impressing upon theseofficials the crisis situation at thePierrepont and the need for immediate action. In order to bring the issue to ahead, the committee has lookedinto the ownership of thePierrepont and investigated legalrecourses that the communitycould use to force the owners toalleviate the glaring deficiencies atthe hotel.
