That is a rarequality in the world of artists. Heis best understood in theHeight%u2019s area for his participation in the community artshows. Every so often he openshis studio gallery in CarrollGardens to show recent work. This time he invited two friends,Jose Catarineu and Fred Lewisto exhibit with him. What is most interestingabout this show is that the workexhibited probably would notfind wall space in any othergallery. The pictures exhibitedare exploratory and often inconclusive%u2014but their presencemay signal something new forartists: an off-off Broadwayarea, where developing artistscan get their work up a gallery%u2019swalls.Bill Pyles, the artist, isdeveloping an expressioniststyle. The two paintings fromlast summer are well workedout. Jose Catarineu is a Spanishartist, who is starting again aftera twenty hiatus. There is apromising spark in all of hiswork. Fred Lewis is the novice inthe group. He has been paintingonly 4 years. One of his paintings, two little cartooned birdsin a blue landscape, is gentlywhimsical. The Studio Gallery is a longwalk down Court Street at 451Court. Or take the bus! Thisshow will close April 7th.
