And by jove the Brooklyn Heights Children's Players succeeded in precenting a delightful, romping child%u2019s version of William Shakespeare%u2019s, %u201c A Midsummer Night's Dream,\class over the past few weekends.Once the perform ance commenced, my patronizing attitude towards children%u2019s theatre turned from ice to snow, so to speak. This wonderful production for children introduced this reviewer to a fascinating aspect of the theatre neglected by many who consider it shallow and unsophisticated. The story of %u201cA Midsummer Night%u2019s D ream %u2019%u2019 concerns the adventures of four starcrossed lovers and a king and queen of the fairies at odds with each other. With the help of the king%u2019s jester. Puck, the lovers resolve their amorous problems, and the king reassumes his command over his obstinate queen.Peter Wilson Strader%u2019s King Oberon, complemented his royal, bravado performance with Linda Murphy%u2019s sweet, Rebellious Qeen Titania.Cliff Gastler%u2019s Puck charmed everyone, and Andy Krawetz. William Shakespeare, the m.c helpfully guided the audience through the play. John Bourne played Quince, the leader of the Roving Players with an endearingly Chaplinese countenance.a\\C^ ^ l%u00ae i)The most charming %u2022 and beautiful actress to appear in the Brooklyn area this season is the lovely, talented, Julie Kestyn, whose sensitive characterization of the rejected Helena truly deserves to be rewarded with other roles by the players.Tony Falcone%u2019s set and lighting transformed the stage into a m ythical tinsel forest without reminding anyone of the energy crisis. The music selected by Jam es Howard Laurence enhanced the play%u2019s Elizabethan aura as did the colorful period costumes by Jerry Moore. Linda Murphy%u2019s created simple effect dances for the 100 young cherubs and fairies who all performed and danced with unusual confidence.Jill Fuchs, the director, on temporary leave from the other side of the footlights, once again shows how children%u2019s theatre need not sacrifice the idea of the playwright or the play for commercial entertainment.Sandler DisplaySet for LIUAn exhibition of paintings by Alvin Sandler will be on display from January 8 to 24 at the lobby gallery of the Brooklyn Center of Long Island University, Flatbush Avenue Ext. at DeKalb Ave., Monday-Friday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sandler attended the New York High School of Music and Art and then studied in Mexico under m uralist Pablo O%u2019Higgins and engraver Leopoldo Mendez.Mr. Sandler%u2019s paintings have been the feature of one-man shows at the Yonkers Museum and New York University and in exhibits at5 to in p. m.i D i c l ^ A / l e x i c oc z f ^ z %u00b1 t a u i a n b%u25a0 M l 15 MON1AGI E STREET .Three Russian Peasants in G allery Players production of Ivan the Fool'at M em orial Presbyterian in Slope Jan. 4 and 5.Gay & TunefulFell Way ShortBY CORRINE COLEMANStuck with the media lore that picked up the original production of Candide as a heavy %u2014 a theatrical before its time, that missed because of the subtleties of the Bernstein score, the Hugh Wheeler book, the Richard Wilbur lyrics which carried the Voltairian message %u2014 I entered the ChelseaThe Brooklyn Museum, New York Public Library, National Council of Churches, National Academy of Design, Palacio de Bellas Artes (Mexico City), and other institutions and galleries. And though it seemed overwrought in contrast to thedeliberate Wilson production, the hour and forty minute musical might have been a proper way to come down from the marathon Stalin trip.Instead, I waited with fixed smile amidst the constant audience laughter, to seek out the turns of language, the double plays, the subtle hints into superstition, authoritarianism, corruption, and self concern during the snags and journeys of the hero.Well okay, the music mocked old musical conceits; the smiling, dashing pause for a rousing number while the world or the play goes awry.
