                                    Page 6 PHOENIX January 3,1974British Season Opens at BAMRoyal Shakespeare Beginning with Richard II'The British Theatre Season at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the first such theatrical endeavor of its kind on the part of any performing arts institution in the United States, will open with a benefit performance of %u201cRichard 11,%u201d by the Royal Shakespeare Company, Jan. 9. The thetre event will be preceded by a buffet-reception. The performance will benefit the Academy%u2019s Perform ing Arts Program.The Earl of Cromer, the British Ambassador to the United States, Sir Donald Maitland, the British Ambassador to the United Nations, John Ford, C.B.E., the British Consul General in New York, form er Governor Nelson Rockefeller, Honorable Walter Annenberg, Honorable John V. Lindsay and Honorable Abraham D Beame are Honorary CoChairmen.The production of %u201cRichard 11%u201d has been hailed by London critics as %u201c stunning,%u201d %u201c brillian,%u201d %u201cfascinating,%u201d %u201cone of the Royal Shakespeare's greatest triumphs%u201d and the performances of Richard Pasco and Ian Richardson who alternate as Richard and Bolingbroke. as well as the direction of John Barton, have been reported in unanimous superlatives.In addition to the Royal Shakespeare Company presentation. the three-month British Theatre Season will include performances by the Actors Company and the Young Vic. In another unusual collaboration on the part of the Academy, many members ofthe Royal Shakespeare Company will participate in seminars and informal workshops at Brooklyn College in an international symposium coordinated by Sir Rudolf Bing.The production, directed by John Barton and featuring the full Stratford RSC, has played to capacity audiences this season at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Britain. Unique %u2014 and central to Barton%u2019s interpretation of the play %u2014 is the alternation of actors Richard Pasco and Ian Richardson in the roles of rivals, Richard and Bolingbroke. There is a long history of role-sharing in Shakespeare, dating back at least as far as 1854 when a London playbill announced the doubling of Othello and lago; however, this will be the first time alternation has been used in a production of %u201cRichard 11%u201d .The opening night performance will feature lan Richardson as Richard. In addition to portraying roles in over 30 RSC productions, including Marat in Weiss%u2019 %u201cMaratSade\tensively on British television.
