Thus our older boy,Evan, attended a cooperativenursery school and went on to aprivate school. We neverseriously considered our options.But this year, when myyounger son Garth came ofschool age, we just couldn%u2019tafford to send both boys. So wepulled Evan out of private schooland enrolled both in P.S. 20,which serves much of FortGreene-Clinton Hill. Enteringfourth grade, Evan wasmiserably ill-prepared. He couldread tolerably well, but had nograsp of study procedure or,worse, how to write.The open corridor at P.S. 20blends an open approach toindividualized learning with themore traditional st$tem andated curriculum. Theresult is less board work andmore individual di covery, butwith an ongoing monitoring ofskills and adherence tocurriculum.Our younger boy, Garth, isdoing beautifully: starting tofourth grader, Evan, is readingana aomg matn aoove graaelevel, and writing, too %u2014 inscript, yet! Perhaps more important, he has discovered thatnot everyone worth knowing ismiddle class. He has friends wholive nearby, so we are not forcedto chauffeur him to friends'houses so he can have a sociallife.P.S. 20 maintains open classesfrom the first through fifthgrades. Its open corridor staffhave trained at Bank StreetCollege of Education, atBrooklyn Friends School, and atthe Creative TeachingWorkshop. Their coordinator,Mrs. Schwartzman, has alsotrained at Bank Street, and is awarm and informed proponentof individualized instruction. Thestaff are open and encouraging,and welcome parentinquiries and visits.snouia pay a visit (225 AaeiphiStreet, between DeKalb andWilloughby Avenues).Because they go to schoolnear home, my kids havediscovered a lot about localprograms and activities. One is arhythms class conducted at St.Luke's Lutheran Church, 259Washington Avenue, on Fridayafternoons. At present, there aretwo groups: 5-, 6- and 7-yearolds move to the music from3:3 0to 4 :30p .m .; 8-, 9- and 10-year-olds take over for an hourat 4:30. Their teacher, HelaineApostol, is now forming a groupfor 3 and 4-year-olds, which willmeet at the same location onFriday afternoons from 2:30 to3:30 p.m. My kids love it; theyrecommend it to yours.
