In five years,CROCUS has grown both inscope and reputation under thedirection and doing of copartners Val Gunning and GinnyHoyt, two Brooklyn Heightsmothers with documentable flairand fortitude.Ginny and Val share aphilosophy geared to meetingthe needs of city kids. They areconcerned with supplyingfunctional, comfortable,fashionable clothing designed towear well on the asphalt\playgrounds of an urbanchildhood. Style and service arevery much in evidence in theroomy brownstone shop whereevery nook and cranny is chockfull of handpicked inventory andwhere each staff member is welltrained in the sizing and serviceability of all the lines ofclothing stocked.Occasionally hectic, butalways helpful, CROCUS hasbecome a sort of watering holefor local mothers %u2014 a place tocome to for information andcommiseration where kids canbrowse and play freely.CROCUS is a full time concernfor Val and Ginny and both havesuccessfully reconciled runninga household and a businesswithout compromising on either.In the early days, before theirchildren were all school age,Ginay and Val took turnshauling, painting and selling andminding their \babies.\buying for CROCUS culling their-'sizable, varied inventory fromnumerous lines and houses.Ginny%u2019s background in art andVal%u2019s experience as a system%u2019sanalyst have proven to bevaluable tools in the shop%u2019soperation'; Neither had anyformal background in m erchandising or retailing but withenthusiasm and commitmentthey have made CROCUS asuccessful shop that%u2019s bothprofessional and personal.Ginny notes that the successof the store is not magical. Oncethe idea of CROCUS was born,hard work and constant reappraisals were in hot pursuit.
