School To Share GiftsAll 535 students at the Berkeley Carroll Street School will gather in the gym at 181 Lincoln Place on the morning of Nov. 25 for the school%u2019s fifth annual Thanksgiving Sharing Assembly where the youngsters, ranging from pre-school through 12th grade, present gifts to children of their own ages. This fall the students have earned money through bake sales and car washes to purchase presents for children staying at the Ronald McDonald House, a non-profit organization which provides shelter for families of children receiving critical medical care away from home. The 5th grade was able to raise more money than was needed for its gift, and decided to donate it to aid children%u2019s cancer research. The Thanksgiving Sharing Assembly was organized this year by Marlene Clary, the school%u2019s director of outreach and of performing arts.During the assembly, a representative from each class will walk to the center of the gym to contribute the gift that his or her class has selected. Musical groups, including the kindergarten chorus, the third and fourth grade chorus, the seventh and eighth grade chorus, the recorder consort and the Upper School Ensemble will perform.Jay Parents MeetParents of children attending or about to attend John Jay High School in Park Slope say they are concerned that the school offers no community programs and suffers from a lack of pride, and at a meeting Nov. 5 with the principal, Harold Genkin, they expressed these concerns and asked that Genkin try some more innovative programs at the school.%u201cUnfortunately, we%u2019re at a bit of a standstill right now,%u201d says one parent, Amanda Rheal. %u201cBut, we don%u2019t know what%u2019s happening at John Jay and we don%u2019t see it as a viable school for Park Slope. %u2019 %u2019Rheal says that about 75 parents attended the meeting and that the school%u2019s program has attracted the concerns of South Brooklyn Rep. Chuck Schumer, Slope/Windsor Terrace Assemblymember Jim Brennan, Slope/South Brooklyn City Counciimember Steve DiBrienza, Community School District 15 Superintendent Jerrold Glassman, District 15 Board Members, Judy Hoffman and Norm Fruchter, and Park Slope Civic Council President Jim Ryan. The meeting attracted a number of complaints and Rheal says that little was resolved. Genkin did agree to sit on a panel with parents and teachers to discuss the community%u2019s feeling more deeply. %u201cWe just want to see a community school that has something to offer everyone in the neighborhood,%u201d says Rheal. %u2014 R.T.Packer Gets StudentsTwo new seniors at Packer Collegiate Institute have recently arrived at the school from Europe.
