Parks Named To Honor Local CitizensContinued from Page 1after a City Hall hearing Nov. 19.For LaCorte, the news has provided a tremendous ooost to his etlorts to bring the 500-year anniversary of the discovery of the new world to Brooklyn. In 1961, the City Council first named Columbus Plaza in the Brooklyn Civic Center after the explorer, and then in 1971, allowed the present statue to be erected in the park space next to the State Supreme Court building.Development plans for a new Hilton Hotel at Renaissance Plaza, however, jeopardized all the work LaCorte had put into gaining the recognition for the Italian explorer because the construction project has been approvedI remember sliding down thehill in the snowy weather andmy brothers playing basketballthere. It seemed appropriate thepark be named for my brother.for the Columbus Plaza area. LaCorte says he would have objected to the project if he had not received assurances from City Councilmembers that another location would be found to name after Columbus. With the new park secured, LaCorte says he has written to the Commission on 1992 and requested that Brooklyn be named the official host city for the celebration. %u201cBrooklyn is the capital of all the cultures and all the languages that are spoken in the United States,%u201d he says. %u201cColumbus Day should be in Brooklyn when it celebrates 500 years in 1992.%u201dGorges appears to have similar expectations and in his announcement of the name changes said, %u201cWe will all meet here in 1992 for the celebration of the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America.%u201dHairy Chapin Park is being named for the singer because of his %u201csocial commitment%u201d on behalf of world hunger and his %u201cchampionship%u201d of many charitable causes. Chapin, who grew up in Brooklyn Heights and sang in the choir at Grace Episcopal Church, organized numerous benefit concerts for social problems during his short life. His brother, Jim, recalls that he and his other two brothers, Steve and Tom, played in the newly named park when they were children. %u201cI remember sliding down the hill in the snowy weather and my brothers playing basketball there,%u201d he says. %u201cIt seemed appropriate that since we grew up at 45A Hicks St. that the park be named after my brother.%u201dJim Chapin%u2019s wife, Diana, deputy planning commissioner for the City%u2019s Department of Parks and Recreation, initially approached Gerges about legislation renaming the park after her late brother-in-law. Jim Chapin says that it was his brother, Tom, who finally suggested the Middagh St. Playground site.%u201cWhat could be more appropriate than to name a park where children play after a man who did so much to help those in need,%u201d says Gerges.Court Street To Be LitFulton Mall is already twinkling with red and white Christmas lights and one merchant on Court St. has decided to start a new tradition this year and decorate the downtown portion of Court St. as well. Amaldo Perez, owner of Golden Palace Jewelry is hoping to enlist the help of his fellow merchants to decorate the street in festive garb.Perez wants to light up Court Street from Atlantic Ave. to Joralemon St. for Chistmas and help attract shoppers to the strip which he now describes as %u201cdead.%u201d%u201cI have spoken to a few merchants who are interested,%u201d he says. %u201cRight now everyone goes to Fulton Street to shop and here the street is very quiet even though it%u2019s a nice place to shop,%u201d Perez says. If all works well this year he would like to make the decorations a yearly tradition. %u2014 L.K.BeThe BestUndressedWomanIn Town117 Atlantic Ave. (corn.
