NA M ES MAKE NEW gTwo members of Saint Ann%u2019s School%u2019s English Department, Patrick O%u2019Connor and Carol Rawlings, have been nominated for The College of the University of Chicago%u2019s Outstanding Teacher award by students in this year%u2019s entering class. Both received a commendation from the University, and a certificate sent with the %u201cdeep admiration and appreciation%u201d of the Dean of the College of the University of Chicago.Robert Lawrence Plotz of Prospect Park West, son of Dr. and Mrs. Charles M. Plotz, was married on November 8 to Susan Felice Guggenheim, daughter of Shirley Guggenheim and the late Herbert Guggenheim. Plotz is an assistant United States attorney in the Southern District of New York.Dr. Laila Sedhom was recently awarded the State University of New York Chancellor%u2019s Award for Excellence, by President of the SUNY Health Science Center at Brooklyn, Dr. Donald J. Scherl. Dr. Sedhom, who has been on the faculty of the Center since 1980, is an associate professor at the College of Nursing. She was cited by Chancellor Clifton R. Wharton, Jr. for her excellence as a teacher and role model for students and faculty.Nancy Henningsen, director of Packer Collegiate Institute%u2019s Middle School, recently hosted a workshop at the Institute presented by the Johns Hopkins Center for Academically Talented Youth. The workshop gave information about the Center%u2019s program, which identifies talented seventh graders through the Scholastic Aptitude Test %u2014 those who achieved the median score for high school juniors are recognized and given awards and opportunities for summer study at Johns Hopkins.Staff Sgt. Victor Gutierrez Jr., son of Hilda Santiago of Atlantic Ave., has successfully completed a U.S. Army primary leadership , course in West Germany. Gutierrez is a vehicle mechanic with the 501st Military Intelligence Battalion.Dr. Donald Allport Bird, associate professor and chair of the Department of Journalism at Long island University%u2019s Brooklyn Campus, was married on Nov. 8 to Maria Therese Iacullo. Bird received his B.A. from Rutgers University, and his M.A. and Ph.D. from Indiana University. Iacullo, a doctoral candidate in history at Columbia University, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hannibal R. Iacullo of Flatbush. Bird is the son of the late Dr. Joseph W. Bird and Virginia Allport Bird.Charles Baird is directing, and Rich Samuelson is the production designer for, John Thomas Coopers%u2019 play %u201cA Day in the Death of Elizabeth.%u201d Both Baird and Samuelson live in Boerum Hill.Gary Bouchard, a student at Long Island University, was elected national representative and chairperson of the Student Academy of the American Academy of Physician Assistants at the annual convention of the AAPA in Boston. He transferred to LIU in 1985, from NY State University Stonybrook. Bouchard%u2019s duties include preparing a newsletter, visiting all 14 P.A. programs in the Northeast Region, and informing first-year students of the benefits of joining the Academy.Mega Honored In SlopeThe Park Slope Geriatric Day Center will honor Park Slope/Bay Ridge State Senator Christopher Mega at its annual champagne reception December 5 at Clockwork%u2019s in Park Slope. Emilie Roy Corey, president of the center%u2019s board of directors, says Mega is being honored for the support he has offered since the inception of the center.%u201cWe at PSGDC are proud to be able to provide excellent transportation, escort, recreation, and information services for frail elderly individuals residing in Park Slope, Windsor Terrace, Sunset Park, Gowanus, Bush Terminal, and Bay Ridge,%u201d says Corey. %u201cWe are proud to be able to add to the many organizations that have honored Senator Mega.%u201dBrooklyn Honors Its Own Hail Oi FamersIn a 25th anniversary event, the 1986 Brooklyn Hall of Fame honored five outstanding citizens at a testimonial dinner on November 13 where Brooklyn Borough President Howard Golden was honorary chairman.Polytechnic University President George Bugliarello, accepting his citation, said, %u201cBy the middle of the last century, Brooklyn had become a concentrated community attracting immigrants from all over the world. They came here to seek their liberty and their fortunes and found in Brooklyn shelter and employment, as well as educational opportunities. A number of them, and an even larger number of their descendants, eventually moved out of Brooklyn, bringing with them to the rest of the country the industriousness and the will to succeed which gave to the world, from Brooklyn, leaders in every field of human endeavour.%u201d%u201cThis historical role of Brooklyn teaches us a lesson that is particularly crucial as we face a future in which we need to regain our economic momentum if we are to preserve the jobs and the freedom that have made this country the beacon of hope for the rest of the world. The lesson is that there is no substitute for that combination of intelligence, hard work and heart that are enduringly appealing qualities of Brooklyn.%u201dThe dinner honored also: Antonio Escolar Alfonso, M.D. chairman, department ofsurgery and director, surgical residency program, The Brooklyn Hospital-Caledonian Hospital; Ida Israel, civic leader, (posthumously), and Lou Powsner, president of the Joint Council of Kings County Board of Trade.Student Leadership Award Citations were presented to: Louis Camporeale, Brooklyn College; Ira Reid, Brooklyn Law School; Laurie Gillen, Kingsborough Community College; Clyde Wilkinson, Medgar Evers College; Freida Bell, New York City Technical College; Cheryl Singletary, Pratt Institute; Kathleen Shaughnessy, St. Joseph College; and Cesar Grullon, Polytechnic University.Grullon, a senior majoring in computer science and technical writing, is president of the Polytechnic Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers and is active in many on-campus and community projects. He is currently working on a proposal to implement the %u201cHead Start%u201d program at Polytechnic which would provide blacks and hispanics with a 4-6 week summer session of review in the areas of physics, chemistry, and calculus.Dean Caryl Stern of Polytechnic University and Marcey Feigenbaum, special assistant to the borough president, chaired the dinner which attracted 200 Brooklyn leaders of government, education, and business.
