Greene/Clinton Hill/Boerum Hill/Prospect Heights 57th District. With the incumbent not even on the primary ballot last month, officials of the County Democratic Party organization are supporting the Liberal candidate over their own.Democrat Stanley Frere, a Chase Manhattan Bank executive, who brought a successful legal action that knocked the incumbent Democratic Assemblymember, Roger Green, from the Democratic Party primary ballot this summer as the result of technical problems with his nominating petitions, says he is campaigning door-todoor and at subway stops without any party assistance. Frere says he is trying to work with a few other Democratic Party candidates, but without the assistance of 57th A.D. Democratic District Leaders, Ed Hightower and Ruby Nottage, his task is difficult. Green is running for re-election tohis seat as both an independent and a Liberal candidate.%u201cThey%u2019ve been hostile to me and I think they ought to thank me,%u201d Frere says. %u201cMy slate decided not to challenge them like I challenged Roger Green, so they weren%u2019t removed from the ballot, i want to open some avenues with them so that we can work together next year.%u201dAccording to Hightower, however, the doors to his office are and will remain closed to Frere. Hightower and Nottage are allies of Green and appear to be remaining loyal to him, regardless of party affiliation. %u201cI%u2019m a leader of conscience and I don%u2019t believe that the person running as a Democrat is a true Democrat,%u201d says Hightower.Hightower is not the only Brooklyn politician who feels that way. Borough President and Kings County Democratic Chairman Howard Golden is also supporting Green and is helping to raise money for his Liberal candidacy.%u201cI think the County organization is being taken for a ride by supporting Roger Green,%u201d says Frere. %u201cThe problem is that A1 Vann has sucked up all the resources available and Roger Green has had to go to Golden for help.%u201d A1 Vann, the Assemblymember from BedfordStuyvesant, was also removed from the Democratic ballot and is running as a Liberal. Vann, however, has not turned to Golden for help. %u2014 R.T.Heights Shelter Needs Volunteers For WinterThe Brooklyn Heights%u2019 Interfaith Shelter will begin its fifth winter of activity on Nov. 1 and more volunteers are needed for the program, says Peter Doiron of the group. An informational sign-up meeting for helpers has been set for Oct. 14 at 7pm at St. Charles Borromeo School, 23 Sidney Place. The Brooklyn Heights%u2019 Interfaith Shelter is a 100 percent volunteer program %u201cproviding beds, simple meals, and caring to 12 homeless men seven nights a week November through April,%u201d says Doiron. This year three community churches %u2014 St. Charles Borromeo, First Presbyterian Church, Plymouth Church of the Pilgrims %u2014 have offered their facilities as shelters. Other local churches donate food, money, and clothing.Help is needed for volunteers to overnight at the shelter, coordinate scheduling, cooking, shopping, fund-raising, moving, telephoning, and mailing. One night a month is the average overnight stay. He says it takes 200 volunteers to adequately staff the operation, one of hundreds throughout New York City belonging to the Partnership for the Homeless, a non-profit umbrella organization formed to create a model for churchbased shelters.%u201cSince many of the homeless fear city-run shelters they are most appreciative of the more caring environments found in shelters like Brooklyn Heights%u2019,%u201d adds Doiron. Call 596-6344 for information.Something Fishy About Golden ProclamationThere%u2019s something fishy in Brooklyn that Borough President Howard Golden is honoring on October 17. That day has been proclaimed %u201cNew York Aquarium Day,%u201d in honor of the Brooklyn institution%u2019s 90th birthday. The day coincides with the Aquarium%u2019s 11th annual dinner-dance benefit at nearby Gargiulo%u2019s Restaurant. The New York Aquarium, located on the Boardwalk in Coney Island since 1957, is the nation%u2019s oldest aquarium. It offers 54 indoor and outdoor exhibits, that simulate the natural habitat of more than 22,000 aquaticspecimens. Its on-site research division, the Osborn Laboratories of Marine Sciences, consistently makes significant research discoveries, using the combination of aquarium research site.Golden presented a citation to Robert F. Smith, who will be honored at the dinner dance for his %u201cexemplary commitment to civic, religious and charitable organizations.%u201d Smith has been a major supporter of the Aquarium for 11 years and lives in Marine Park.P e t e r , P a i d a n d M a t ywith special guestsPete Seeger.
