Trees, sidewalks and benches will be replaced in the am bitious restoration project that seeks to balance the history of the park w ith its contemporary usage.(Phoenix/Koch Photo)Park Officials Outline New PlansFor Prospect Park Restoration WorkBY LIZ KOCHThe future for Prospect Park holds a number of capital improvement projects that promise to change the appearance of the park from its many arches to the sidewalk and shaded tree alley that surrounds the park. In coming years the Parks Department will be engaged in projects that will upgrade the current structures in the park, and improve maintenance while attempting to remain true to the original Olmstead and Vaux design in the renovations being undertaken. At the most recent meeting of the Borough President%u2019s Parks Advisory Board on October 1, Prospect Park administrator Tupper Thomas presented an updated description of the Park%u2019s capital improvement projects, and outlined a schedule for when the projects were anticipated to begin and finish. She also detailed the progress of projects already underway, but cautioned those present to exercise patience in regard to the start of the more than 20 projects planned for the park.%u201cJust after the fiscal crisis the Parks Department had a very ambitious capital improvement program. A lot of projects were started and then they didn%u2019t work out,%u201d she told the roughly 20 people who attended the meeting at the Picnic House in Prospect Park. %u201cThese will take a little more time with a little less money but the projects are all in there,%u201d she said optimistically.TWO PLANS OUTLINEDOn the top of the agenda that night were two vastly different projects planned for the park. Jeremy Foster, from the Philadelphia architectural firm of Andropogan Associates, presented plans for the first phase of a long range plan to reconstruct the sidewalks and promenades around Prospect Park. This project, entitled Perimeter 1, will begin at 7th St. on Prospect Park West and stretch around Bartel Pritchard Circle towards 16th St. along Prospect Park Southwest. As the first phase of a larger project, the initial design chosen for the work is expected to set a precedent for the reconstruction of the remaining of the Park%u2019spromenade and design issues addressed that night at the meeting included the placement of trees, the selection of paving material and the replacement of broken benches along the sidewalk.%u201cIn the design of this project we had to take into consideration not only the historic precedent but also the contemporary character of the park,%u201d Foster said. %u201cThe most important element, however, is the trees, the double alley of tall shade trees creating a promenade as Olmstead intended,%u201d he stressed.Foster outlined the problems thatIn the design of this projectwe had to take intoconsideration not only thehistoric precedent, but alsothe contemporary characterof the park.originally inspired the $1.8 million construction project, pointing to the broken and cracked sidewalk, the large number of trees that had died over the years, leaving holes in the progression, and the abundance of missing or broken benches lining the periphery of the park.%u201cThere are big gaps especially in the trees,%u201d he explained.Pointing out that original plans for the promenade intended that the promenade serve as a gathering place after dark, he said in its current state of disrepair the area fell short of its designated purpose. The project will seek to restore that purpose by focusing on the three crucial elements of the promenade: the trees, benches and sidewalks.WILL REMOVE TREESOne of the major changes proposed in the plan calls for the removal of approximately 30 percent of the still standing trees, many of which Foster pointed out had already died Continued on Cane 10.1 1 1 %'IIP -Anericin OptomefiicAvsooaionS T U A R T A .
