With his first stride on stage, Stephen Poulos captured the evening, with an easy grace and comic skill, set off by a rather polished vocal technique. His is a most sizable and pliant sound of depth and beauty, that would probably work just as successfully in a large house. Poulos was clearly the star and was quite gentlemanly about it. This barber was the real aristocrat on stage.Conductor Alejandro Guzman led the singers and full orchestra in a solidly conceived %u201cBarber.%u201d He worked hard to accommodate the singers, though he did rush Figaro%u2019s first and most famous aria,%u201cLargo al factotum.%u201d Rossini is famous for his climactic crescendos and speed, but clarity and a subtle stateliness are intrinsic to the music.Rossini was a genius of the bel canto operatic tradition. He stopped composing, it is said, in anticipation of Verdi and the verisimo school. This emerging 19th Century singing style leaned towards a newromanticism stripped of florid lines and much more modernly dramatic. The runs, trills and liquid phrasing in %u201cThe Barber of Seville%u201d need a particular vocal slant, more towards flexibility and brilliance than the weight, force and sheer vocal size that became necessary for the dramatic intensity of Verdi and Wagner. This opera is fiendish in its spitfire patter, especially during ensembles, and the singers, (with the exception of some obvious cueing during the recitatives) were professionally prepared. Guzman did a respectable job keeping the ensemble together and managing to be musical about it. The orchestra sounded good for a pick-up group. Though there were some intonation problems, Guzman led them lyrically and held the unsurpassed melodic inventions of Rossini in good stead.Stephen Oostering, as Count Almaviva, had a velvety tenor, quite sweet and rich, which became more winning as he warmed up. He had some trouble, however, executing the more ornamented passages and seemed more at home with the style of Verdi than that of Rossini.BARBER OF SEVILLE: The Regina Opera Company production continues with performances on December 6, at 8pm, and December 7, at 4pm.
