This is what many kids may be looking forward to as they recover from report cards during Christmas vacation. But, parents don%u2019t panic. There are plenty of places in and around Brownstone Brooklyn that are helping make the grade this winter with a host of ongoing activities and special events to exercise and entertain those young minds and bodies. Here are some highlights of what%u2019s going on around town.TAKING TO THE ICEFor nature lovers, both enthusiastic and reluctant, Prospect Park offers enough fun to keep kids going practically the whole vacation. Ice skating, second only to snowball fights as supreme winter sport, can be practiced by the graceful and the gawky, prima ballerinas and speed demons, and young and old alike at the Kate Wollman Rink. They supply the ice, the music, skate rentals and a shuttle bus that circles the park every hour. The Abe Stark Rink at Coney Island is also open now for those who prefer their skating indoors.OF HORSES AND ANIMALSFor those who like their nature on the other side of the fence, there%u2019s the Prospect Park Zoo. Visit such fellow winter creatures as the seals and polar bears, then duck inside to the playful monkey house, the colorful bird house or the exotic residences of the lion, llama, rhinoceros and other worldly critters.Kids more inclined to horsing around will enjoy saddling up at Culmitt Stables, which runs supervised trail rides around and in the park every day, and pony rides for the smaller buckaroos. On December 28, the Urban Park Rangers will sponsor %u201c Let the Horse Do the Walking,%u201d a guided tour of the Park%u2019s history and inimitable design, riding high on horseback through its pristine beautyEXPLORING WITH THE RANGERSThe Park Rangers are planning several exciting and educational tours over the holiday season. Performances, demonstrations and feedings of the Aquarium%u2019s sharks, Beluga whales, electric eels and sea lions happen daily, along with exhibits of colorful and unusual fish from around the world.A special treat at the 90-year-old institution is the new Red Sea exhibit, a naturalistic habitat of coral crevices and tunnels that provides grazing grounds and escape routes for the Golden Butterfly, Halfmoon Angel, Masked Puffer and other fish found only in the Red Sea.
