(Phoenix/Neuberger Photo)CB6 Remembers The Past At PartyThe key words at the annual holiday party of Community Board Six were eating, drinking, and merriment. The 200-plus people gathered at Casa Rosa, 384 Court Street, weren%u2019t there to discuss land use or transportation or to disagree over zoning and parking meters. They were there to have fun.%u201cIt%u2019s the end of the year,%u201d says Celia Cacase, who helped organize the party, %u201cwe look to make it a relaxed atmosphere for everybody.%u201dCB6 District manager Bob Acito did his part. Although he was just getting over the flu, Acito was there to greet every arriving guest, who included Councilman Abe Gerges and BACA founder Chuck Reichenthal. As they hung their coats they were caught by CB6 staff member Norma Valez, who goodnaturedly demanded that they buy tickets for the 50/50 raffle, the proceeds of which go to the board%u2019s treasury. %u201cIf we collect $100,%u201d she told Winston Davidson of the Mayor%u2019s Community Assistance Unit, %u201cyou will win fifty.%u201d After a sidelong glance at Valez with mock skepticism, Davidson bought three tickets. %u201cIt%u2019s on the up and up,%u201d she assured him.Over drinks and food, board members renewed old acquaintances and made new ones. Current member Anita DeMartini and former chair Gerard Carey reminisced about shared escapades in the early 70%u2019s, including calming 500 demonstrators who were protesting the replacement of an x-rated movie house on 9th Street with a McDonald%u2019s Restaurant and bringing a Supreme Court injunction against Borough President %u201cHowie%u201d Golden. %u201cHe had just started his first term ,%u201d said DeMartini sympathetically, %u201cand we threw down the gauntlet. Things were crazy then,%u201d she continues, smiling, %u201cthey are more routinized today, it works better.%u201dFor other guests, the gathering provided a chance to experience the new. Maria Favruzzi has lived on Henry Street for over a decade, but only joined the board in February. %u201cI%u2019m looking forward to a year of good hard work,%u201d she says. For Julia Thompson, newly-appointed captain of the 76th Precinct, it was a chance to meet the citizens of the community outside her daily duties. Most people talked about anything but politics over pasta and chicken dishes served by Casa Rosa owners, the Ilianos and the DiSommas families. Other area merchants donated what seemed to be endless food. Pizza came from Vinnie%u2019s, from Sol%u2019s and from House of Pizza. Baked goods were sent by Capputto, Mama Leone%u2019s and J & V Bagels, and Joe%u2019s Superette and Pioneer gave rice balls and paper products.By 6pm, the party was noisy and crowded. Acito and Valez led the onslaught to the dance floor, moving to the spirited latin sounds of a two piece band, Gino Roma. Soon the rose design on the parquet floor was covered with dancing feet.Chairperson Louise Finney stood by the sidelines. %u201cI don%u2019t dance, that is, unless Tessie (Williams, Board Two District manager) makes me,%u201d she says, laughing. %u2014 M.J.N.Celebrate at CB TwoParticipating in the festive holiday spirits, members of Community Board Two held their annual Christmas Party on Dec. 15 at the board%u2019s office at the YWCA on Third Avenue. Some 15 members of the board that serves Downtown Brooklyn and Fort Greene attended the party and partook in holiday food and spirits.Board Two chair Jerry Renzini trips thelight fantastic with Vivian Patterson.(Phoenix/Koch Photo)records for the party, board members wandered out onto the dance floor, took a few spins and visited the buffet table and bar. Board chairman Jerry Renzini, chaired this event by making sure everyone had enough to eat, including the band. It most certainly was a holiday occasion with all talk about the board and its activities on hold until January and with the main concern of the evening, potato salad and whether the music was too raucous. %u2014 L.K.Refinancinga MortgageNow that interest rates arelower, you may be tempted torefinance your mortgageBefore you jump at the newinterest rates, make sure that anew mortgage will really saveyou money.Refinancing costs moneybecause you are applying fora new mortgage and you mustpay all the associated costs, such as points.
