The deadline for submission of applications is Dec. 15, 1979 for Competition No. 1. and April 1, 1980 for Competition No. 2. Contact the Citizens Committee for New York City, 3 West 29th Street, (578-4737) for an application or information. Each applicant that meets the basic qualifying guidelines will receive a charter block association certificate signed by the Mayor.Jay Sets Memorial AwardJohn Jay High School is establishing a student financial award in memory of Michael Ncmson, a social studies teacher at the school who died suddenly in the summer of 1979 at 34 years of age. Nemson was known for his outstanding participation in all school activities during his fourteen year career and students chosen for the award will have to present these characteristics. The award will be presented bi-annually to a student of the graduating class and Anthony Awccky, head of the social studies department, is pleased that it is an award which helps students who participate in activities other than sports, where most of the scholarships arc. The first presentation of this award will take place in January 1980. \establish a method whereby the senior class will have input on the student chosen for this award,%u201d says Aweeky.Merchants Get BuzzersIn a major effort to curb hold-ups along Myrtle Avenue, 36 merchants arc participating in a \Roy Vanasco, of the Myrtle Avenue Redevelopment Coalition says that \transmitter,\activated during a hold-up to sound in a \The buddy merchant then would call 911 and, Vanasco adds, he could help \down a license number of the getaway car.\The Myrtle Avenue Redevelopment Coalition effort which takes in the area between Carlton Avenue and Emerson Place, last summer received a $5,000 grant from the Citizens Committee for the Cit of New York to buy and install the system. The Coalition eceived $1,000 so far and alter all the buddy buzzers have been installed they will receive the rest of the grant.According to Vanasco some have already been installed and adds that \January 1 deadline.%u2014R.A.Park Study Given OKThe contract for a Prospect Park management study costing $78,635 was approved by the Board of Estimate on Nov. 15. Funding for the study will come from federal Community Development V monies. The contract for the study was given to New York Interface Development Project, Inc., a private non-profit technical group which conducted a similar study of Central Park in 1973-5. Heading the project will be E.S. Savas of Columbia University, who also managed the Central Park Study.Borough President Howard Golden%u2019s office reports that the study will concentrate on Park usage, safety, concessions, the Zoo, recreation programs and other areas. It will look at the role to be assumed by a new manager of Prospect Park, and Golden also reports that a Prospect Park Manager%u2019s Office has been approved for $156,000 by the Mayor%u2019s Community Development Committee.%u2014L.H.Eagle Volumes Loaned to LIUA 740 volume collection of the Brooklyn Eagle has been acquired, on a longterm loan, by Long Island University%u2019s Brooklyn Center, and will be available soon for the public. The 112 year old Pulitzer Prize winning newspaper, which ceased publication in 1953, is now in a complete run at the library at the downtown Brooklyn campus of LIU, thanks to Russell Bastcdo, executive director of the Long Island Historical Society. The collection, according to Dr. Elliot Gamer, Director of Libraries at LIU, will be a valuable source for historical, political, and social research. During the last 40 years of the Eagle%u2019s existence, it was a newspaper of national and local importance, and from its earliest years Walt Whitman, America%u2019s renowned 19th century poet, served as the editor. Attendance records show that Charlotte Brown and Jerome Perdum, Sr. have missed at least four meetings, while Charles Hall has missed at least three. Although minutes arc not yet available for the most recent, November, Board meeting, Chairman Grantlcy Crichlow notes that Jerome Perdum attended that meeting.
