Burrough comes to Fort Greene after appearing in The Wiz, Bubbling Brown Sugar and this year's tribute to Eubie Blake at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.After this performance of jazz, pop, show tunes and spirituals, the Center will fall into a regular stride of weekly performances onMonday evenings. The week after Burrough sings, the Moffett Family will perform, followed on August 20 by the International Afrikan American Ballet and on the 27th by the Brooklyn Opera Society.The Fort Greene Center for the Arts is located in the Brooklyn Masonic Temple on the corner of Lafayette and Clermont Aves. The Chinese Music Ensemble will be performing Chinese folk music from various regions, and also some ancient classical works.The Brooklyn Botanic Garden will be offering a concert by The Polyphonic Quartet on Sunday August 5th, and on August 19th will offer a concert by The Chinese Music Ensemble, at 3pm at the Alfred T. White Memorial, just up the hill from the greenhouse overlooking the lake. The Garden can be entered from the parking lot of the Brooklyn Museum, from EAstern Parkway between the library and the museum, or from 1000 Washington Avenue. It%u2019s happening this weekend on the South Street Seaport, and will host continuous Popeye cartoons in the V isitor%u2019s Center at 16 Fulton St., Popeye gifts, bits and souvenirs all along Fulton St. between Water St. and South St., and, of course, spinach snacks for the muscle builders amongst us. For music there will be tunes from TV and the movies performed by the Blue Sparks From Hell, strolling chantey singers starting at 3pm, and a brass band with stiltwalkers setting out at 3:30pm. Along the length of Fulton St. will be games, workshops, stands and memorabilia, and at 2:30pm there%u2019s a special Look-alike contest; so if you think you look like Popeye, Swee%u2019pea, Professor O.G. Watasnozzle or any of the rest of the crew, join in.
